Rock n Roll at the Apple Store

It may be summer break, but does the PSU go on vacation? No way!

Checkout this new music video from US Uncut, featuring no less than five GW students. The message is loud and clear: no budget cuts until corporations pay up!

Student / Farmworker Alliance Rally - Emancipation Day

It was a cold and rainy Emancipation Day, but that didn't stop the Progressive Student Union from marching in solidarity with the Coalition of Immolakee Workers!

The Student / Farmworker Alliance is demanding that Giant sign an agreement with the CIW to ensure that no slavery is used in picking the tomatoes sold by the supermarket. By signing with the CIW, Giant would join the ranks of many large corporations, such as Whole Foods and McDonalds, to end modern day slavery and poverty wages in Flordia's tomato fields.

Shout outs to the Georgetown Solidarity Committee and the DC Fair Food Network for coordinating this event!

We're in the Hatchet!

Check out this great article about the Progressive Student Union in the GW Hatchet!

It talks about our participation in the Living Wages, Healthy Communities Coalition, an alliance of community organizations that is asking Wal-Mart to respect DC workers.

Contact us to get involved with the next dorm-storming run!

US Uncut Action - April 17th

Props to our friends over at US Uncut DC and Power Shift for hosting an awesome action on Sunday! Over 100 people (including some PSU members) cheerfully occupied a BP station in downtown Washington to draw attention to the company's near-total tax-dodging. If major corporations were forced to pay their fair share in taxes, many of the devastating budget cuts facing middle America could be avoided.

USuncut DC Action on April 15th

On Friday, April 15th, USuncut DC decided to take action against the Verizon Corporation by hosting a book signing in the Verison Store at Union Station. Nicholas Shaxson, the author of Treasure Islands, came out with upwards of 20 supporters to show Verizon that they are not happy with Corporate Tax Dodgers. A few of the fans dressed up as pirates to keep with th "Treasure Island" theme and altogether, the USuncut representatives said that this may have been their best event yet!! Nicholas Shaxson signed several copies of Treasure Islands and handed them out to the crowd free of charge, asking only for a few donations.

An article by Chuck Collins goes into further detail about Verizon and many other major corporations are dodging taxes.

A few of our organization's members decided to show up in support of this action, but solely representing their personal opinions.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn

Dominique Strauss-Kahn visited the School of Media and Public Affairs on April 4th, 2011. A group of students hung this banner outside the event, publicly contesting the thesis delivered by the IMF president.

Alta Gracia for Colonial Inauguration

GW Bookstore Manager Bob Blake confirmed today via telephone that the Colonial Inauguration "give-away" t-shirts will be sourced from Alta Gracia. This is a great victory!

Alta Gracia is the only major sweat-free brand of t-shirts. The company is an experiment in socially responsible production, and a challenge to companies like Russel Athletic who claim that paying living wages would put them out of business.

We are very happy to promote Alta Gracia on campus, in coordination with the United Students Against Sweatshops. Thanks for Steve Roache at the Colonial Inauguration office and Bob Blake at the GW Bookstore for working with us so closely.
